The Role of Matched Adoption Specialists  

National Adoption Month happens every November and it’s a time to highlight needs within our community and celebrate families being formed. In 1995 the first National Adoption Month was proclaimed by former President Bill Clinton and it has been a national and state-wide initiative ever since.

What are post adoption services and why might you need them?

Great questions! Many children who are adopted from foster care have special needs that continue throughout their youth and into adulthood. Families who have adopted children from foster care know first hand that the act of adoption does not do away with those special needs, yet frequently adoptive families experience a lack of support once the adoption is finalized.

Every child deserves a #ForeverFamily. Adoption of children from foster care who are in their teen years is a rewarding experience. Many adoptive families view the choice to adopt an older child from foster care as a family mission that strengthens their family and their communities. When a child in the foster care system, leaves the foster care system because they have become an adult it is referred to as aging out of foster care. Statistics that describe the number of children who age out of foster care and end up homeless or in prison are heart breaking.

Our adoption story started on the TARE website. Well, actually I had been thinking and praying about adopting a child with special needs for quite some time. When I found the website and showed Joseph that ALL the children under the age of three on the site had some sort of special needs, God used that as a tool to prick his heart as well.

Levi and Khloe came into our lives in April 2009. Khloe came straight from the hospital where she was being treated for strangulation to the point of her limbs turning blue, and Levi came from a friend of the family’s where he had been starved for days. Khloe quit breathing on us the very first weekend we had her and we had to call 911.
