Luminarias

Luminarias are twinkling lanterns that add a festive touch along a walkway or porch. Traditionally, the Spanish used them around Christmastime to light the way for the Christ child, welcoming Him to the world. Today, they’re a beautiful and cost-effective way to bring warmth, light, and tradition to your holiday season.

For a safe, child-friendly option, consider using flameless LED candles or solar-powered lights, you'll still get the flickering effect without the worry of open flames. They’re an easy, meaningful way to light up the season!

These simple and beautiful lanterns are a lovely decoration and a fun craft project. There are two common methods of creating luminarias:

Simple Paper Bag Luminarias

The most common style is made from a paper or plastic lunch bag. Fold down the top of a brown or white lunch bag. Punch or cut shapes in the bag to create designs, then fill it with a couple of cups of sand. Add a votive candle, flameless LED candle, or solar-powered light. Set the bags on steady ground and illuminate the candles. They are best when placed in a row lining a path or walkway!

Reusable Luminarias

For a reusable version, start with large metal juice cans. Punch holes in the sides using a nail or hole puncher in creative shapes. Spray or paint the cans with flat paint in your choice of color. Once dry, add 2 inches of sand and place a candle inside. Watch them flicker and add light to an outdoor area.
