When we think about communication, we often focus on the words we’re saying. However, how we communicate is just as important, if not more, than what we’re communicating. In fact, 93% of communication is non-verbal!

Consider these aspects of non-verbal communication, as they significantly influence the impact of our words. While our tone, volume, and cadence as aspects of speech, they are actually critical components of our non-verbal communication because they influence the emotional and relational aspects of how the message is received.

Tone

Our tone of voice carries a lot of weight in how our message is interpreted. Is our tone the usual one, or is it sweeter than normal? Perhaps it’s more aggressive than we intended. Our tone can convey emotions that our words alone may not, so staying aware of how our voice sounds is vital. A neutral tone can often express calmness and clarity, while a harsher tone might signal frustration, even if that wasn’t our intent.

Volume

The volume at which we speak also communicates a great deal. Is our volume normal, or have we unconsciously raised our voice? Staying regulated is key to effective communication. In some situations, speaking softer than usual can convey control and sensitivity, helping to de-escalate tension. This is especially important when speaking to a child—what may seem like a raised voice to us can feel overwhelming or even threatening to them. Being mindful of our volume ensures that we maintain a sense of safety and support, fostering better understanding and trust.

Cadence

Cadence refers to the speed and rhythm of our speech. A regular cadence can communicate steadiness and composure, while accelerated speech may signal excitement, nervousness, or urgency. Slowed speech, on the other hand, can indicate thoughtfulness or a desire to emphasize certain points. Paying attention to our cadence helps in maintaining clarity and ensuring our message is easily understood.

By being mindful of these elements, we can ensure that our communication aligns with the message we want to convey. To learn more, check out our VIDEO HERE and be sure to subscribe to our channel for other great content from CK Family Services.
