Making the most of summer

July sits right in the middle of summer like the cream in an Oreo: sweet, a little messy, and best enjoyed before it disappears.

The days are long, the routines are a little looser, and there is still time to enjoy the simple things that make this season feel special. This is the time to make fresh-squeezed lemonade, eat popsicles outside, stay up a little too late, and let the kids run through the sprinkler until they are tired and happy. It is the season for slow mornings, road trip snacks, library visits, backyard adventures, and the kind of memories that do not require a perfect plan.

You do not have to travel far or spend a lot to make summer meaningful.

Be a tourist in your own town. Look up a local attraction your family has never visited, or one you have not been to in years. Check for free days, discounted tickets, library passes, or community events. Visit a museum, splash pad, farmers market, nature trail, or historic spot nearby.

Seek out excitement. Sometimes the simplest outings are the most fun. Park near the airport and watch the planes take off. Drive through downtown or a part of town that looks different from where you live. Make a list of things to spot along the way: a mural, a fountain, a train, a statue, a dog hanging out a car window. Turn an ordinary drive into a family scavenger hunt.

Build adventure with basics. You can also create excitement at home. Set up a camping night in the backyard! String yarn in a  criss-cross pattern through the house to create a "laser maze" to navigate. Do a "Chopped" cooking challenge and create a meal out of whatever is found in the pantry! Design an indoor mini-golf course with paper cups and pool noodles. Have a paper airplane "air show," play flashlight tag, or host a family karaoke night!

Summer does not have to be polished to be wonderful. A little mess, a little heat, a little flexibility, and a lot of laughter can go a long way. So enjoy the freedom of these slower days while you can. Say yes to simple fun. Let the schedule breathe. Make room for rest, play, and time together.

And then, as August approaches, begin gently dialing things back in. Move bedtimes a little earlier, bring back a few familiar routines, and start the steady march toward school-season rhythms.

For now, let summer be summer: a little loose, a little loud, a little sticky, and full of moments your family will remember.
