Shining a Light on a Critical Issue
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to shed light on an issue that affects countless families across the country. For us, as a foster care agency, the connection is deeply personal and important: many of the children who enter foster care have not only experienced neglect or abuse but have also witnessed domestic violence in their homes.
Domestic violence doesn’t just harm the adults involved. It impacts entire families. Children who grow up in violent or unstable homes often carry the deepest emotional scars. Even if a child is never directly harmed, witnessing violence between caregivers can create profound and lasting trauma. The fear, confusion, and instability they experience can shape how they see the world and those effects often follow them into foster care.
How We Can Help Children Heal
When home is no longer a safe place, foster parents step in to provide safety, stability, and structure. They offer the consistency and care children need to begin feeling secure again.
But the healing process takes time. Many children in foster care continue to struggle with emotional pain, behavioral challenges, or mental health needs that stem from what they’ve endured. That’s why foster families need support, too.
Our agency goes beyond providing foster care. We also offer a Children’s Mental and Behavioral Health Program designed to help young people process their experiences and build resilience.
Through emotional and behavioral support, children learn to:
Understand and express their feelings in healthy ways
Develop coping skills for anger, anxiety, or fear
Rebuild trust and a sense of safety
With the right resources and caring adults in their lives, children can begin to heal, grow, and thrive.
Building a Foundation for Hope
Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminds us that protecting children means more than simply removing them from unsafe environments. It means surrounding them with care, compassion, and the right tools to heal.
When foster families work hand-in-hand with therapeutic programs, children gain not only stability but also a real chance at a brighter future.
This month and every month, let’s remember: Behind every statistic is a child who deserves safety, healing, and hope. Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build stronger, safer families for generations to come.
