There’s something powerful about creating something with your own two hands — especially when those hands are working side by side with your child’s. From the clink of tools to the final brush of paint, every moment becomes a memory. You're building more than projects. You’re building connection.
Carving out time for quality moments can be tough. Thankfully, there are some creative and budget-friendly events and activities at local hardware stores. Whether your child dreams of becoming an engineer, enjoys crafting, or just loves to build, these free and low-cost events offer the perfect space to explore, learn, and bond.
Here are a few to check out:
Elliott’s Hardware – This Saturday 10 to Noon
Elliott’s Hardware hosts a variety of family-friendly events throughout the year. This weekend only: Elliott’s is offering a special Father’s Day Project on Saturday — a great opportunity to surprise Dad with something handmade.
Check their events page regularly — from themed crafts to seasonal builds, you never know what fun they’ll be hammering up next. Many of Elliott’s events are walk-in friendly, but others may need RSVP.

Home Depot – Every First Saturday at 9 AM
Home Depot’s Kids Workshops are held on the first Saturday of each month at 9:00 AM. Children receive a kid-sized apron, a building kit, and tools to complete the project — which could be anything from a birdhouse to a toy car. And they get to take it home with pride and may even earn a commemorative pin to adorn their carpentry apron.
These workshops are popular and supplies are limited. Check your local store for specifics and consider registering online in advance to secure a kit.

Lowe’s – Every Third Saturday at 10 AM
Lowe’s offers their DIY-U Kids Workshops on the third Saturday of every month from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Each month features a new themed build, and kits include materials for painting and decorating too. It’s a great way to get kids thinking creatively and problem-solving with their hands. Young DIYers can collect badges and level up to Senior Builder.
Registration is usually required online. Check your local store for specifics.

More Than Just a Build
These construction adventures aren’t just about nails and glue. They’re opportunities to nurture patience and problem-solving, celebrate teamwork, spark imagination, and create a memory you’ll both treasure. Whether you’re raising a toddler or bonding with an older child, these events create a shared sense of pride and accomplishment.
It’s not just about what’s built on the table — it’s about what’s built between you.
