World Mental Health Day

Each year on October 10, the world pauses to recognize World Mental Health Day, a reminder that mental well-being is just as vital as physical health. For those working in demanding, heart-centered roles like child welfare, foster care, and family services, it can be easy to focus on others while neglecting your own needs. But just as you can’t pour from an empty cup, caring for yourself is essential to caring for others.

Taking Time to Rest and Recharge

Whether you’re a caseworker, therapist, foster parent, or community advocate, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is key to resilience. Regular breaks, nurturing hobbies, and meaningful social connections help prevent burnout and sustain your passion for helping others.

Simple acts like taking a walk, journaling, practicing mindfulness, or spending time with loved ones can make a real difference in your emotional well-being.

Recognizing this, CK Family Services will close all offices on October 10 to offer a dedicated Mental Health Day for staff. This day provides space to pause, reflect, and recharge, ensuring that our team can continue serving families and children with renewed energy and compassion.

We invite everyone, within our organization and beyond, to use this day as a reminder: your mental health matters. By stepping back, we can all come back stronger.

The Importance of Community Support

Mental health thrives in connection. While self-care is vital, so is building and maintaining supportive relationships. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to isolate, but reaching out to a friend, family member, or colleague who might be struggling can make all the difference.

When we share our experiences and listen without judgment, we strengthen the sense of community and belonging that helps everyone heal. A strong, compassionate community not only supports adults but also provides children with the stability and understanding they need to thrive.

Supporting Mental Health in Children and Teens

Children and teens today are facing rising levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. As parents, caregivers, and mentors, we play a vital role in helping them navigate these challenges.

Create safe spaces for open, honest conversations. Ask questions like, “How are you really feeling?” and reassure them that it’s okay to express their emotions. Consistent, caring communication can make a powerful difference.

Sometimes, however, a child or teen may need additional help. CK Family Services offers a Children’s Mental and Behavioral Health Program designed to provide compassionate, professional support for children and families facing emotional or behavioral challenges. Through Skills Training and Mental Health Case Management, our team provides evidence-based practices that really work, to promote healing, growth, and long-term wellness.

If you believe a child or teen in your care could benefit from additional support, we encourage you to reach out and learn more here: CMBH.  Taking that first step can make a life-changing difference.

Know When to Seek Help

If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember that help is available 24/7. Call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 for immediate support. You are not alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

This World Mental Health Day, take time to reflect, rest, and reconnect, not just for yourself, but for the people who count on you every day. By caring for our mental health, we strengthen our communities, our families, and the future we’re building together.
